Support Local During the Coronavirus: Hopscotch Bakery + Market

March 16, 2020

In the greater Champaign County area, local businesses aren't just businesses. Our neighbors, family, and friends are all working to keep things as normal as possible amidst the COVID-19 precautions as outlined by the Governor of Illinois and the Champaign-Urbana Public Health Department. These challenging times serve as a reminder to residents in the greater Champaign County area just how wonderful our local businesses, restaurants, and community truly is. If there's ever a time to embrace #OutsideofOrdinary, it's now.

Hopscotch Bakery+Market

Hopscotch Bakery + Market is just one of many local businesses making changes to adapt to the COVID-19 virus. New regulations are closing down dine-in options for restaurants and cafés all over the state. Hopscotch owner, Kaya DeFehr, and her team had to decide how to proceed.

"I asked our staff what they wanted to do, and they said they want to keep things as normal as possible," says Kaya. That means some hours adjustments and a curbside pickup option, all run through the new online ordering site hopscotchcurbside.com

Customers can place their order, then pull into the parking lot for curbside service. Payment is completed online, and patrons still get the pastries, cakes, bakery items, and other favorites they love. The bakery is set to stay open from 9 am to 1 pm.

"Being a part of a neighborhood, we appreciate people stopping in to shop local and shop small. Your business means a lot right now, and luckily things have stayed steady today, but there's just no telling what happens next. No matter what, we want to bring what we do best to the community," says Kaya.

Morning updates on Instagram Live are going to introduce patrons to what's on the menu each day. All the regular favorites and innovative flavors are still planned to be baked and sold. It's not business as usual, but it still means a bit of normalcy during these uncertain times.

How to support local business during the coronavirus

As we see a reduction in business to our area, we continue to encourage the support of our local businesses and the hospitality industry. As of Sunday, March 15, it is state-mandated that bars & restaurants close through March 30. Please note that carry-out and curbside pick-up options are available. We are collecting information on these options and posting them here, but also encourage patrons to follow their favorite spots on social media for updates or call for more information.

We will continue to post updates on our Business Updates and Cancellations page as we receive them, but encourage everyone to take guidelines from the Illinois Department of Public Health and the CDC seriously.
