Staying Cool in Champaign County

August 11, 2020

We could see it coming a mile away. When we enjoyed the low 70s last week, Champaign County residents knew what was really going on. A brief August cooldown is always followed by the return of heat and the last fling of summer weather. Well, when things heat up in the greater Champaign County area, cooling down is pretty easy. Check out a few ways to cool down as we enjoy the last weeks of summer!

Splash pads and pools in C-U

Pools in Champaign-Urbana stayed closed this summer due to COVID-19, but you're not completely out of options. Kids are in luck because two amazing splash pads are still running. The Hessel Park Splash Pad was freshened up in 2018 and offers some really fun and unique fountains to enjoy. Likewise, the Douglass Park Splash Pad is a long-time favorite featuring a number of sprinklers to help fight the summer heat.

If you're really set on swimming, you're not totally out of options. The Rantoul Aquatic Center is still open for business this summer with COVID-19 safety guidelines in place. Likewise, adults looking to get lap swimming in for a workout can schedule a 45-minute session at the Urbana Indoor Aquatic Center. Public swimming is closed, however.

Hitting the lake

While it might not be the same as a pool, a visit to one of our area's lakes can provide a great way to cool down and unwind. Homer Lake is a favorite for two of our area's most popular lake activities: kayaking and fishing. Whether you're reeling them in or paddling the day away, Homer Lake is 814 acres of fresh air and much-needed outdoor time.

While rentals aren't available this year due to COVID-19, bringing your own paddleboat or canoe to Lake of the Woods is also a blast when you're looking for some time to reflect and cool down on the lake.

grab a frozen treat

If you're not looking for fun on the water but still need to cool down, give a frozen treat a try! Jarling's Custard Cup was recently named as one of the top 10% of restaurants worldwide by Travelers' Choice. It's not hard to see why with weekly custard specials and delicious treats ranging from pies and snowstorms to traditional favorites like a banana split or ice cream sandwich.

Sidney Dairy Barn is another favorite with some amazing options on the menu. Just check out the Turtle Tornado to the right! Seriously, we need that in our lives. If it looks a little intimidating, then go with a classic scoop of their fresh ice cream or bring a pint home to enjoy later!
