The University of Illinois Arboretum is a living laboratory, with plant collections and outdoor spaces that support teaching, research, and public service programs of several campus units. Instrumental to the Arboretum development was the Miles C Hartley Selections Garden, dedicated in 1994 and made possible by a bequest from Hartley family and friends. The Hartley houses All-America Selections trials of annuals and perennials as well as displays of AAS and Fleuroselect winners other exceptional and new flower varieties. Other Arboretum highlights include the Noel Welcome Garden (donated by Rosann Noel), the Hosta Society Display Garden of hundreds of hosta and shade companion plants (a collaborative effort of the Arboretum and the Illinois Prairie Hosta Society), the Frank Kari Walkway and native plantings, the Champaign County Master Gardeners Idea Garden, the Japan House Tea and Dry Gardens, the Pollinatarium, and acres of lawns and various groves. Under development are the South Arboretum Woodlands on Windsor and Lincoln Avenues and the Sesquicentennial Garden that will feature small flowering trees, lawns, and hundreds of understory perennials.
